چکیده

We study the incidence rate of damped Lyα systems associated with the host galaxies of gamma-ray bursts (GRB-HOST-DLAs) as functions of neutral hydrogen column density (NHI) and projected star formation rate (SFR) using cosmological SPH simulations. Assuming that the occurrence of GRBs is correlated with the local SFR, we find that the median NHI of GRB-HOST-DLAs progressively shifts to lower NHI values with increasing redshift, and the incidence rate of GRB-HOST-DLAs with logNHI > 21.0 decreases rapidly at z ≥ 6. Our results suggest that the likelihood of observing the signature of IGM attenuation in GRB afterglows increases towards higher redshift, because it will not be blocked by the red damping wing of DLAs in the GRB host galaxies. This enhances the prospects of using high-redshift GRBs to probe the reionization history of the Universe. The overall incidence rate of GRB-HOST-DLAs decreases monotonically with increasing redshift, whereas that of QSO-DLAs increases up to z = 6. A measurement of the difference between the two incidence rates would enable an estimation of the value of ηGRB, which is the mass fraction of stars that become GRBs for a given amount of star formation. INCIDENCE RATE OF GRB-HOST DLAs AT HIGH REDSHIFT

We study the incidence rate of damped systems associated with the host galaxies of gamma-ray bursts Lya (GRB-host DLAs) as functions of neutral hydrogen column density ( ) and projected star formation rate (SFR) NH i using cosmological SPH simulations. Assuming that the occurrence of GRBs is correlated with the local SFR, we find that the median of GRB-host DLAs progressively shifts to lower va...

Unveiling the Secrets of Metallicity and Massive Star Formation Using DLAs along Gamma-ray Bursts

We present the largest, publicly available, sample of Damped Lyman-α systems (DLAs) along Swift discovered Gamma-ray Bursts (GRB) line of sights in order to investigate the environmental properties of long GRB hosts in the z = 1.8− 6 redshift range. Compared with the most recent quasar DLAs sample (QSO-DLA), our analysis shows that GRB-DLAs probe a more metal enriched environment at z 3, up to ...

The nature of H I absorbers in gamma-ray burst afterglows: clues from hydrodynamic simulations

In recent work, we have shown that it is possible to link quantitatively many aspects of damped Lyman α (DLA) absorbers in the spectra of quasars to high-resolution simulations of galaxy formation. Using runs from the same series of hydrodynamic numerical studies, we consider the expected properties of intrinsic Lyman α absorbers seen in the spectra of high-redshift (z > 2) gamma-ray burst afte...

Probing the Ism near Star Forming Regions with Grb Afterglow Spectroscopy: Gas, Metals, and Dust

We study the chemical abundances of the interstellar medium surrounding high z gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) through analysis of the damped Lyα systems (DLAs) identified in afterglow spectra. These GRB-DLAs are characterized by large H I column densities NHI and metallicities [M/H[ spanning 1/100 to nearly solar, with median [M/H[ > −1 dex. The majority of GRB-DLAs have [M/H[ values exceeding the cos...
